History of Showfall Media

[Contains major spoilers for Chapter 4]

Theater Epoch

1916:

- Adam MacFall (18), an aspiring Scottish actor and playwright living in London with his mother and baby sister, Freya (1), is conscripted to fight in WW1.

- At the Battle of the Somme, Adam fights in the trenches. His fellows abandon him, but he survives thanks to the efforts of a field nurse.

1918:

-WW1 ends. Adam (20) returns home, deeply emotionally scarred from his experiences in the war.

1919:

-Adam’s mother dies of tuberculosis.
- Adam (21) moves to New York to start life anew with Freya (5). He becomes employed as an actor in a New York underground theater, “Infinity’s Aperture”, owned by Rufus Powell.

1920:

-Powell takes pity on the strange young man, beginning to view him like a son.
- Adam’s (22) reputation grows quickly. His acting is incredibly evocative, and draws in a large audience, particularly when the Prohibition begins and Infinity’s Aperture doubles as a speakeasy. However, he always had a bigger interest in writing; Powell doesn’t produce any of Adam’s plays due to their macabre nature, but he encourages his craft.

1925:

-Adam (27) acquires US citizenship, after having been in the US for over 5 years.
-Powell entrusts Adam with more responsibilities in running Infinity’s Aperture.

1929:

-The Great Depression begins. Infinity’s Aperture manages to hold on due to the theater still doubling as a speakeasy, but some employees are let go. Adam (31) remains, but is paid less. His sister, Freya (14), begins to get sick.

- Adam writes another new show, but is once again turned down to produce and direct it by Powell.

1930:

-Powell sadly says he must let Adam (32) go due to no longer being able to pay him.
- With no money to care for Freya (15), Freya succumbs to her illness, and dies.
- Adam goes into a deep depression. His writing is the only thing he lives for now.

1933:

-The Prohibition ends. Infinity’s Aperture suffers further losses now that alcohol is legal.
-Out of the blue, Adam (35) shows up and asks Powell to put on his newest show. Powell of course declines, and Adam kills him.

-Adam forges Powell’s signature, gaining ownership of Infinity’s Aperture, telling the tale that Powell had always viewed him as a son and was secretly training him behind-the-scenes to take over the business.

1934:

- Adam (36), after taking over the company, rebrands Infinity’s Aperture to “MacFall Theater” to solidify his ownership.
- A young orphan and aspiring actress, Evelyn Campbell (16), auditions for Adam’s play, and is cast instantly. The play depicts the brutalities of war, and Evelyn stars as a young field nurse who commits suicide at the end of the play.
- This play drives away most (if not all) of Infinity Aperture’s usual audience. But its strangeness and macabre nature spreads by word of mouth, and quickly attracts a new, darker audience. Revenue starts to return.

1935-1936:

- Adam writes and directs a series of darker and darker plays, each of them starring Evelyn and depicting various horrors that humanity has been responsible for.
- Evelyn (18), despite her success, wants to leave and continue her career elsewhere, but Adam won’t let her ‘abandon’ him. He threatens her, showing her what really happened to Powell.
- Hector Anderson (15), an orphaned street rat at the time, weaseled his way in and saw one of Evelyn’s performances, and was instantly enraptured with the art.

1937:

- Hector (18) begins to shadow Adam (39) as a trainee director, and begins using the nickname “the Hetch”. He is a little too enthusiastic about the nature of the shows, viewing them more as outlets for his innate sadism and narcissism than as cautionary tales about what atrocities humanity is capable of.

1939:

- Jeremy Elbertson (20) joins the cast - he is naive and earnest, believing MacFall’s works to be Shakespearean in their quality and messages.

- Hetch (20) grows increasingly envious of the Evelyn’s limelight, wanting all of Adam’s attention for himself.

- WW2 begins.

1941:

- Adam (43) is drafted to fight in WW2.
- Before he leaves, Adam assigns Hetch (22) to temporarily replace him as interim director.
- In his arrogance and mentor’s absence, Hetch purposely casts Evelyn (23) in demeaning roles and does everything he can to belittle her, while simultaneously forcing her and Jeremy (22) by means of violent coercion to continue working for the company.

1943:

- [[REDACTED]]

- [[REDACTED]]

1945:

- [[REDACTED]]

- With covert funding from [[REDACTED]], [[REDACTED]] continues her work from [[REDACTED]] while Adam (47) returns to MacFall Theater in New York with plans to test whatever new technology [[REDACTED]] produces.

- Upon returning to MacFall Theater, Adam promptly closes the doors to the public and purchases the building atop the Theater, as well as the immediate surrounding ones.

- No one on the outside hears from Hetch (26), Evelyn (27), or Jeremy (26) at this time.

Tower Epoch

1946:

- Construction begins underground with funding from [[REDACTED]] - the first Patron of the Arts. The buildings immediately above are knocked down during that time and replaced by a massive skyscraper.

- Adam (48) tells the others that he’s turning the Theater into a television studio, so as to “keep up with the times”.
Adam begins experimenting with [[REDACTED]]’s new consciousness transmission and mental rewiring technology.

1947:

- Adam (49) is diagnosed with stage 4 terminal brain cancer, and is told that he will die within the next few years.
- Using [[REDACTED]]’s experimental tech, he first tries to swap bodies with Jeremy (28), but the procedure fails. Both are scarred by the procedure.
- Jeremy is forced to continue acting in MacFall’s macabre productions, but now solely as villainous and disfigured characters, being forced to play into harmful stereotypes. He grows more resentful.

1948-1949:

- Adam grows more desperate to preserve himself, pushing the very limits of his body with [[REDACTED]]'s technology. Through extreme measures, he is able to keep himself alive, but only barely.

1950:

- Adam (52) tries the consciousness swap again, but with Evelyn (32). It is a success.
- Adam still ‘cares’ for Evelyn in his own way, not wanting her to die. He ‘repairs’ her (or rather, his old body) using [[REDACTED]]’s technology, turning her into the TV monster (the head could not be preserved due to the cancerous tumor in the brain). Evelyn’s voice is stolen, and she is forbidden to leave the premises of the building.

1951:

- The skyscraper receives a new name: Showfall Media Tower.
- Adam (53), in Evelyn’s (33) body, announces to the masses that Adam had passed away from the wounds he had received in the war, and that he had left the company in its entirety to his favorite actress.
- Hetch (32) remains jealous of Evelyn, even in her current monstrous state - he wanted to be the face of Showfall Theater. He continues to treat her horribly, even in the presence of Adam, who is simply apathetic to the whole situation.
- Showfall holds open auditions for its transition to film. Any new actors are offered spiked alcohol and then sign contracts waiving their rights to their own autonomy.
- Hetch begins to come up with new twisted ideas for productions - the audience can call in to vote on outcomes! This is the beginning of Showfall’s era of interactive media.

1952:

- The consciousness transfer technology has evolved thanks to [[REDACTED]]'s research. Clone technology is now here.
- Adam (54), Hetch (33), and Jeremy (33) can now keep transferring their consciousnesses into clones of their younger bodies (or Evelyn’s (34), in Adam’s case).
- Evelyn abhors Showfall’s work, thinking it too dangerous to continue. She decides to use her new form to attack Adam, but is prevented from killing him by his new ‘drone’ staff. Not wanting to let her die but also unable to let her roam free, Adam confines her underneath the Tower, in the old MacFall Theater.

1953–2000:

- Showfall Media continues with the TV format for decades, kidnapping people who wouldn’t be missed to test their viability as actors.
- The company still receives funding from [[REDACTED]] in return for access to [[REDACTED]] and MacFall’s innovative tech.

- Evelyn remains imprisoned underneath the Media Tower, looking forward only to visits from Jeremy.

2000:

- Development of Phantoptics technology begins.
- Development of rift technology begins.

2020:

- Rift and Phantoptics technology is finally perfected.
- A Phantoptics chip is planted in Evelyn (102), who now is ‘promoted’ to being Showfall’s ‘Security’. As she is now controlled by Hetch (101), she is allowed to roam the Media Tower. Hetch treats her as more of an animalistic pet than a human.

2021:

- Adam (123) constructs the Faraday Chamber so as to be able to converse with Evelyn (103) and anyone else with a Phantoptics chip out from under anyone else’s influence.

2023:

- Hetch (104) produces his “Social Experiments”, which are live-streamed on the Ranboolive Twitch channel.
- Jeremy (104) has had enough of the treatment he and Evelyn have received over the years and refuses to contribute to the suffering of more cast members. He attempts to assist the current star cast member, Ranboo, only to be promptly executed by Hetch for ‘interrupting his production’.

Present:

- Hetch proposes to test an even more immersive use for Phantoptics technology in the form of a live experience that feels like a video game: “Anathema Annihilation”. Adam (125) approves.
- Showfall’s Patrons are given exclusive access to the beta test.
